RAINBOW MALADY

Installation
Art Context Prize, Black Box, Brussels
2010

Continuing with the previous work Hennez Mauritz & Me, I created this site-specific installation for the Art Context Prize. Using garments from fast fashion giant H&M, the work critiques contemporary Western fashion and, by extension, society, with its trend-based consumerism and wealth gained from the exploitation of people and resources. I embroidered the garments and assembled them with mixed materials, often discarded, such as cardboard, fabrics, rubbish and found objects. Sometimes I use the burning of clothes as an aesthetic device to incorporate the devastating effects of Western mass culture.

The result is a vibrant and evocative installation that offers a space for critical awareness about Western trendies.
